John Galsworthy

John Galsworthy (1867–1933) helped shape the English novel's passage from Victorian certainties to twentieth-century doubt. A barrister who turned to literature in his thirties, he wrote with an insider's knowledge of the leisured classes and a reformer's impatience with their complacency. The Forsyte Saga made him famous — a multi-generational study of money, marriage, and the hunger to own. His plays, including Strife and Justice, brought the same social scrutiny to the stage. Awarded the Nobel Prize in 1932, Galsworthy combined elegant realism with a quiet moral seriousness that influenced a generation of English writers.
