Description

John Galsworthy's Tatterdemalion gathers short stories in two movements: of war-time and of peace-time. The Grey Angel opens on an old woman in southern France knitting comfort for the wounded, then the book widens through shell-shock, internment, small kindness, and later peacetime cruelty and pity. Fifteen war pieces and eight after: endurance told in fragments across a whole collection.

Author

John Galsworthy (1867–1933) helped shape the English novel's passage from Victorian certainties to twentieth-century doubt. A barrister who turned to literature in his thirties, he wrote with an insider's knowledge of the leisured classes and a reformer's impatience with their complacency. The Forsyte Saga made him famous — a multi-generational study of money, marriage, and the hunger to own.
