Description

War-time sketches, then peace: Galsworthy's Tatterdemalion is a book of pieces. The Grey Angel gives an old woman in southern France knitting for the wounded; other tales turn to Defeat, Cafard, The Recruit, then peacetime Spindleberries and Manna. Hospitals, internment, a dog, and small mercies pass in short compass. Compassion arrives as weather across the collection.

Author

John Galsworthy (1867–1933) helped shape the English novel's passage from Victorian certainties to twentieth-century doubt. A barrister who turned to literature in his thirties, he wrote with an insider's knowledge of the leisured classes and a reformer's impatience with their complacency. The Forsyte Saga made him famous — a multi-generational study of money, marriage, and the hunger to own.
