Description

Five Tales opens with The First and Last: barrister Keith Darrant faces a moral crisis when his brother confesses to murder, and loyalty strains against justice. The volume also turns through A Stoic, The Apple Tree, The Juryman, and Indian Summer of a Forsyte. Guilt, family ties, and hard choices press against a rigid society, each story its own reckoning in short compass.

Author

John Galsworthy (1867–1933) helped shape the English novel's passage from Victorian certainties to twentieth-century doubt. A barrister who turned to literature in his thirties, he wrote with an insider's knowledge of the leisured classes and a reformer's impatience with their complacency. The Forsyte Saga made him famous — a multi-generational study of money, marriage, and the hunger to own.
