Bram Stoker

Bram Stoker (1847–1912) wrote Dracula and then had to live in its shadow. An Irishman in London, he kept Irving's theatre running by day and, by night, invented a vampire who travels by timetable and feeds on paperwork as much as blood. The novel is a collage of voices; the monster is organised. Later cinema gave him a look; Stoker gave him a method. Twenty titles sit here, most of them quieter than the one that named a genre. He died without seeing what the Count would become. The night has had a dress code ever since.
