Beatrix Potter (1866–1943) gave the world Peter Rabbit, then spent a lifetime proving she was more than a nursery name. A Victorian girl who drew what she saw — animals, plants, the texture of a garden wall — she made books in which every cabbage and jacket button earns its place. Later she became Mrs Heelis of the Lakes, a sheep farmer and a fierce guardian of countryside. The tales stay small on purpose: comedy, danger, and appetite in a few pages.
