Description

A giant’s winter garden, a nightingale’s song paid in blood, then Potter’s kitchen: Tom Kitten, Samuel Whiskers, Timmy Tiptoes, dough and rats and a squirrel’s store. Fairy Tales for Adults Volume 5, unabridged English, runs parable beside pantry — Wilde’s expensive charity, Gloucester’s rolling-pin. Two temperatures of tale in one sitting. Light and dark in alternate rooms, spoken so both argue well. Selfish Giant and Nightingale, then a rat with a plan.

Author

Oscar Wilde (1854–1900) was born in Dublin, took a double first at Magdalen College, Oxford, and made conversation a form of literature. The Picture of Dorian Gray is the one novel — beauty, bargain, and a portrait that keeps the score. The Importance of Being Earnest is the comedy in which nothing is earnest except the jokes. Prison and exile followed the trials. Style was an ethic. Scandal became a second plot.
