E. Nesbit (1858–1924) reinvented children's literature by letting magic walk into ordinary English life — leftover tea, railway platforms, and wishes that go wrong in the most practical ways. Nesbit wrote as an adult who still remembered how children actually talk: funny, fierce, and rarely pious.
