Description

Five siblings find the Psammead, a sand-fairy that grants wishes with comic and costly consequences. Nesbit's fantasy of desire meeting responsibility in everyday mischief. Spoken as when every wish comes true just wrong enough to teach you what you asked for.

Author

E. Nesbit (1858–1924) reinvented children's literature by letting magic walk into ordinary English life — leftover tea, railway platforms, and wishes that go wrong in the most practical ways. The Railway Children, the Bastable books, and the Psammead adventures taught young readers that wonder need not be solemn. Nesbit wrote as an adult who still remembered how children actually talk: funny, fierce, and rarely pious.
