Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu

Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (1814–1873) was an Irish master of Gothic fiction whose spectral tales raised the ghost story to a literary art. Carmilla preceded Dracula by a quarter-century and helped define vampire fiction; Uncle Silas sealed the locked-room inheritance thriller. Le Fanu wrote from a Dublin townhouse he rarely left after his wife's death — earning the nickname 'The Invisible Prince.' His collection In a Glass Darkly remains a landmark of supernatural literature.
