Description

The gothic story is narrated by a young woman Laura preyed upon by a female vampire named Carmilla, later revealed to be Mircalla, Countess Karnstein. Laura lives in a picturesque and solitary castle amid an extensive forest in Styria. Her father is a wealthy English widower retired from service to the Austrian Empire.

Author

Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (1814–1873) was an Irish master of Gothic fiction whose spectral tales raised the ghost story to a literary art. Carmilla preceded Dracula by a quarter-century and helped define vampire fiction; Uncle Silas sealed the locked-room inheritance thriller.
