Description

In Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu's work In a Glass Darkly: Carmilla, the reader is presented with a gothic narrative that subverts traditional gender roles, exploring themes such as the abjection of female desire and heteronormative anxieties. Through its use of the supernatural and horror aesthetic, Le Fanu's novella illustrates how patriarchal structures attempt to control female sexuality.

Author

Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (1814–1873) was an Irish master of Gothic fiction whose spectral tales raised the ghost story to a literary art. Carmilla preceded Dracula by a quarter-century and helped define vampire fiction; Uncle Silas sealed the locked-room inheritance thriller.
