Author

Charles Perrault (1628–1703) set down the French fairy tales that still furnish childhood. A man of Louis XIV's court and the Académie Française, he gathered Cinderella, Puss in Boots, Sleeping Beauty, and Little Red Riding Hood into forms polished enough for the salon and stubborn enough to keep their peasant bone. Perrault wrote as if wonder needed manners — and as if manners still hid wolves, pumpkins, and glass slippers.
