Description

Perrault’s old French night: Beauty and the Beast, Blue Beard, Cinderella — rooms, keys, and the price of curiosity. Willa Cather’s Burglar’s Christmas is another kind of homecoming, American and unfairy. A volume of tales that still know how to threaten, and how to open a door. Bluebeard’s key still works. Cather’s burglar is a son at a door, which is another kind of spell. Together they make a night of stories that remember danger and still want a bed.

Author

Charles Perrault (1628–1703) set down the French fairy tales that still furnish childhood. A man of Louis XIV's court and the Académie Française, he gathered Cinderella, Puss in Boots, Sleeping Beauty, and Little Red Riding Hood into forms polished enough for the salon and stubborn enough to keep their peasant bone. Perrault wrote as if wonder needed manners — and as if manners still hid wolves, pumpkins, and glass slippers.
