Description

Bluebeard’s key, Cinderella’s night, Beauty and the Beast — Perrault’s French rooms where curiosity has a price. Then Willa Cather’s Burglar’s Christmas, a son at an American door, another kind of spell. Fairy Tales for Adults Volume 3 is an unabridged English listening of tales that still know how to threaten and how to open a door. Old night-fear, spoken; a bed waiting after the danger. French keys and an American homecoming in one sitting of wonder.

Author

Charles Perrault (1628–1703) set down the French fairy tales that still furnish childhood. A man of Louis XIV's court and the Académie Française, he gathered Cinderella, Puss in Boots, Sleeping Beauty, and Little Red Riding Hood into forms polished enough for the salon and stubborn enough to keep their peasant bone. Perrault wrote as if wonder needed manners — and as if manners still hid wolves, pumpkins, and glass slippers.
