Jonathan Swift

Jonathan Swift (1667–1745) wrote Gulliver's Travels, a children's book that is not, and a satire that still bites the hand that reads it. An Anglo-Irish dean of St Patrick's, he spent a life between London power and Dublin grievance, sharpening pamphlets until they cut. The Modest Proposal is a joke with no laugh; the Travels look like adventure until the Houyhnhnms arrive. Ten titles here, and the anger has not gone off. He is funnier than his reputation and crueller than his jokes. Ireland's angriest dean, still in the pulpit.
