Robert Louis Stevenson
Robert Louis Stevenson (1850–1894) gave adventure its modern bounce and the double life its household name. He was an Edinburgh lawyer's son who would not stay still: tuberculosis, canoes, Pacific islands, and sentences that never limp. Treasure Island taught boys (and everyone else) how a story should turn; Jekyll and Hyde taught adults how a conscience can. The essays are as alive as the yarns. He died in Samoa, far from the fog that made him, still writing. Nineteen titles on this list, and the wind at the back has not dropped.
