Description

Seasonal Prayers: Stevenson, Ignatius, Anselm, a Mozarabic voice, Kālidāsa, an Irish blessing — English readings, each followed by Tchaikovsky at the piano, Anton Kingsbury. Family, hope, trust, gratitude, the coming year. The Big Nest’s year in petitions and Russian melody. Not a single liturgy. A sequence of old asks, then piano that does not explain them. For turning seasons. Bible, saints, and a few neighbours in one hour of speech and keys. A year of asks, Tchaikovsky between them.

Author

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840–1893) wrote ballets, symphonies, and The Seasons — Russian melody at a public temperature. The piano cycle is a year in a room: months as moods, a calendar you can play. The big scores (Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, the concertos) made him the first Russian composer the world could hum. Fourteen titles here, many of them that indoor year. He was shy of the crowd and devastating when the crowd arrived.
