The Prince is an early work of modern political theory, by Nicolo Machiavelli. The book is about the ideal ruler and how they should rule. It covers a wide range of topics, from how to acquire and maintain power, to the use of fear and deception in politics. The book has been controversial ever since it was published, with many accusing Machiavelli of advocating for ruthless and immoral behavior by rulers.

Author

Niccolò Machiavelli (1469–1527) turned Renaissance Florence into a school of hard truths. Exiled from office, he wrote The Prince as if the fate of states depended on nerve, timing, and a willingness to look at human motives without flinching. Courts called him cynical; later centuries called him the father of modern political science.
