Niccolo Machiavelli

Niccolò Machiavelli (1469–1527) turned Renaissance Florence into a school of hard truths. Exiled from office, he wrote The Prince as if the fate of states depended on nerve, timing, and a willingness to look at human motives without flinching. Courts called him cynical; later centuries called him the father of modern political science. Either way, his prose is brisk, practical, and strangely dramatic — politics as theatre where fortune and virtù share the stage. Machiavelli's name became an adjective; his books remain more interesting than the insult. Read him for the shock of honesty, not for a licence to be cruel.
