Description

A profound sociological analysis of the United States. Written to explain democratic ideals to a European audience, the text presents a "philosophy of Americanism". Rather than focusing purely on facts, he examines the underlying psychological forces shaping early 20th-century culture across four core pillars: self-direction, self-realisation, self-perfection, and self-assertion.

Hugo Münsterberg (1863–1916) was a German-American psychologist and a pioneering figure in applied psychology. A student of Wilhelm Wundt, he was invited by William James to direct the Harvard psychological laboratory. Münsterberg revolutionized the field by applying psychological principles to legal systems (founding forensic psychology), industrial efficiency, education, and medicine. He also wrote landmark early theories on film criticism.
