Description

The Adventures of Old Mr. Toad tells the story of a toad who is harassed by humans and other animals, but manages to outwit them all in the end. The story teaches children about the importance of being clever and resourceful, and also about the dangers of being careless around wild animals.

Author

Thornton W. Burgess (1874–1965) was a Massachusetts conservationist who taught children the woods through talking animals. Old Granny Fox, the Burgess Bird Book for Children, and the Animal Book made field knowledge feel like a neighbour's story. He wrote a daily newspaper column for decades and kept a sanctuary in his name. The tone is kindly, exact about habits, and still a door into the meadow.
