Description

A landmark text that helped introduce psychological treatment to the American public. Münsterberg argues that mental illness is a disorder of the brain, separate from religious or spiritual concerns. He emphasizes the power of suggestion, hypnotism, and subconscious influence in treating conditions like anxiety, hysteria, and obsession, firmly grounding psychotherapy in experimental science.

Author

Hugo Münsterberg (1863–1916) was a German-American psychologist and a pioneering figure in applied psychology. A student of Wilhelm Wundt, he was invited by William James to direct the Harvard psychological laboratory. Münsterberg revolutionized the field by applying psychological principles to legal systems (founding forensic psychology), industrial efficiency, education, and medicine. He also wrote landmark early theories on film criticism.
