Description

Ilya Oblomov spends his days on the sofa or lost in the childhood estate Oblomovka, while pragmatic Stolz hustles for progress and Olga’s love almost pulls him into motion. Goncharov turns that inertia into comedy, then into a quiet tragedy: schemes of reform that never leave the room, a will that retires in public, the thin line between peace and refusal. Russian stagnation, told as one man’s dressing-gown fate.

Author

Ivan Goncharov (1812–1891) was a Russian novelist whose masterpiece Oblomov gave the world one of literature's most memorable portraits of inertia and gentle melancholy. Alongside The Same Old Story and The Precipice, his fiction combines social observation with a humane, often comic attention to everyday life.
