Ivan Goncharov

Ivan Goncharov (1812–1891) was a Russian novelist whose masterpiece Oblomov gave the world one of literature's most memorable portraits of inertia and gentle melancholy. Alongside The Same Old Story and The Precipice, his fiction combines social observation with a humane, often comic attention to everyday life. A careful craftsman who also served as a government censor, Goncharov stands among the major realists of nineteenth-century Russian literature.
