Description

Young Chevalier des Grieux falls hopelessly for capricious Manon Lescaut, and their consuming passion spirals through luxury, ruin, and exile as devotion and desire clash with every social bond that tried to hold him. Love’s power becomes tragedy and moral test alike. Spoken as when Manon Lescaut still asks what a heart will surrender once it has chosen its ruin.

Author

Abbé Prévost (1697–1763) wrote Manon Lescaut, the story of a passion that ruins a young man for love of a woman who cannot stay faithful to poverty. Few eighteenth-century novels are leaner or more devastating. Prévost's tale became opera, film, and a permanent European myth of desire against sense.
