Abbe Prevost

Abbé Prévost (1697–1763) wrote Manon Lescaut, the story of a passion that ruins a young man for love of a woman who cannot stay faithful to poverty. Few eighteenth-century novels are leaner or more devastating. Prévost's tale became opera, film, and a permanent European myth of desire against sense.
