Description

Cuentos de amor by Emilia Pardo Bazán is a collection of passionate, psychologically rich short stories exploring love in its many forms—romantic, forbidden, unfulfilled, and tragic. Set in Galicia and beyond, the tales blend realism with emotional intensity, portraying women’s inner lives and societal constraints. Pardo Bazán examines desire, duty, class, and gender roles with sharp insight and poetic prose. From doomed affairs to quiet longings, these stories reveal the complexities of the heart under the weight of tradition, making Cuentos de amor a poignant exploration of love’s power and limitations in 19th-century Spain.

Author

Emilia Pardo Bazán (1851–1921) brought French naturalism into Spanish fiction and then made it her own. A countess, journalist, critic, and novelist, she wrote of Galicia, class, and women's lives with a candour that startled her century. Los pazos de Ulloa remains a landmark of Spanish realism: rural power, desire, and decay observed without flinch.
