Emilia Pardo Bazán

Emilia Pardo Bazán (1851–1921) brought French naturalism into Spanish fiction and then made it her own. A countess, journalist, critic, and novelist, she wrote of Galicia, class, and women's lives with a candour that startled her century. Los pazos de Ulloa remains a landmark of Spanish realism: rural power, desire, and decay observed without flinch. Pardo Bazán argued for women's education as fiercely as she argued for the novel as a serious art.
