Description

Packets for Anna. Packets for Mrs Norton. Clarissa sorts the papers of a life while the body thins: the will, the family letters, Brand?s officious report, Belford at the door. Volume 8 stays in the narrow room as Morden?s name enters the air. Spoken as arrangements made in a steady voice, while a house still thinks it has time.

Author

Samuel Richardson (1689–1761) was a London printer who taught the English novel how to think from the inside. Pamela and Clarissa are vast books of letters: virtue under siege, feeling as plot, and readers who wait on the next envelope. He made consciousness dramatic — not action on the road, but conscience in a room. Fielding mocked him; Europe copied him. Clarissa remains one of the longest, fiercest moral tragedies in the language.
