Samuel Richardson (1689–1761) was a London printer who taught the English novel how to think from the inside. Pamela and Clarissa are vast books of letters: virtue under siege, feeling as plot, and readers who wait on the next envelope. He made consciousness dramatic — not action on the road, but conscience in a room. Fielding mocked him; Europe copied him. Clarissa remains one of the longest, fiercest moral tragedies in the language.
