Saint Teresa of Avila

Teresa of Avila (1515–1582) wrote the Interior Castle and reformed Carmelite life with a will as strong as her prayer. A Spanish nun, mystic, and later Doctor of the Church, she treated the inner journey as architecture: rooms of the soul, each demanding honesty. With John of the Cross she founded the Discalced Carmelites — contemplation with a reformer's backbone. Teresa's prose is vivid, funny, and unafraid of dry practicality. Two titles in our catalogue cannot hold her whole work, but they open that rare voice: ecstasy that still knows how to run a house.
