Description

Will Warburton is a generous young merchant until his partner?s City gamble wipes out the family?s money. To keep his mother and sister afloat he opens a grocery under another name, and hides the apron from friends who still think him a gentleman. Shame, secrecy, and London class pride press hard, until love and honest work force a clearer measure of who he is. Gissing?s romance of real life: commerce, pride, and the cost of independence, spoken as human drama you can follow.

Author

George Gissing (1857–1903) was the most unflinching realist of late Victorian England — a novelist who wrote what others preferred not to see. In New Grub Street he exposed the bitter economics of literary life: talent ground down by poverty, compromise, and the market. The Nether World, Born in Exile, and The Odd Women extended that clear-eyed vision to slum existence, intellectual exile, and the precarious lives of unmarried women.
