Description

Author

Yevgeny Zamyatin (1884–1937) trained as a naval engineer in St Petersburg, sailed icebreakers, joined the Bolsheviks, and then wrote against the new demand for one soul. We is the glass city of numbered citizens, a Benefactor, and a love that cracks the equation — the dystopia Huxley and Orwell would later inhabit. He was allowed to leave; he died in Paris. The engineer's eye never left the page. Light, here, is not freedom.
