Description

Dreams of speaking to Venus about love while she wears furs lead our narrator to a manuscript, Memoirs of a Suprasensual Man. This manuscript tells of a man, Severin, who is so infatuated with a woman, Wanda, that he asks to be her slave, and encourages her to treat him in progressively more degrading ways.

Author

Leopold von Sacher-Masoch (1836–1895) was a Galician-Austrian novelist whose Venus in Furs gave European literature a contract, a fur, and a name psychology later borrowed. He wrote of Galicia, folklore, and the theatre of domination with a seriousness his later reputation often forgets. One title here. The novella is colder and funnier than the word that grew from it.
