Description

"Vain Fortune" by George Moore explores the complexities of love and social expectations in 19th-century Ireland. The novel follows Maurice, an artist, as he grapples with romantic entanglements, societal pressures, and the clash between passion and convention. Moore's narrative delves into themes of desire, betrayal, and the consequences of choosing between personal happiness and societal conformity. Set against a backdrop of changing values, "Vain Fortune" offers a compelling examination of the human condition and the enduring struggle for authenticity in matters of the heart.

Author

George Moore (1852–1933) was the Irish novelist who brought French naturalism into English fiction and never quite stopped arguing with Ireland about it. Trained among the painters and writers of Paris, he wrote of art, desire, and the stubborn facts of ordinary life — servants, theatres, and consciences under pressure. Esther Waters remains his most durable novel: a story of a working woman's endurance told without Victorian flinch.
