William James (1842–1910) was an American philosopher and psychologist whose Principles of Psychology helped found psychology as a modern science and whose essays on belief, habit, and religious experience reshaped philosophy in the English-speaking world. Brother of the novelist Henry James, he wrote with unusual clarity about how the mind works and how truth is tested in experience.
