Description

In Volume 3, the unraveling of Augustus Melmotte’s empire reaches its climax, exposing the moral and financial corruption that has consumed Victorian society. As scandals erupt, characters face the consequences of their greed and deceit, with Marie Melmotte asserting her independence and Paul Montague seeking redemption. Trollope masterfully concludes his critique of ambition and materialism, revealing the fragility of wealth and status. With biting satire and profound insight, this final volume delivers a poignant reflection on human folly, resilience, and the enduring struggle for integrity in a flawed world.

Author

Anthony Trollope (1815–1882) spent his days as a Post Office surveyor and his early hours at the novel — a clerk's discipline that produced an English county of clergy and a later London of money. Barchester Towers is the church as weather: preferment, gossip, a bishop's wife. The Way We Live Now is the same eye on speculation and the social lie. He wrote without apology for the method. Church, vote, and marriage sit in the same air.
