Description

Notovitch’s disputed claim: Tibetan records of Jesus’s ‘lost years’ in the East. The Unknown Life of Jesus Christ is 1894 sensation — pilgrimage, a hidden manuscript, a Jesus among Buddhists. History it is not; as a document of hunger for another gospel, it still travels. Scholars said the monastery had no such book. Believers wanted the missing years filled. Read it as a period craze with a long afterlife in alternative Jesus lore, not as a source.

Author

Nicolas Notovitch (1858 – after 1934) was a Crimean-born adventurer and writer best known for The Unknown Life of Jesus Christ (1894), which claimed Jesus spent his 'lost years' studying in India. The story, said to rest on a manuscript at Hemis Monastery, was disputed almost at once and is generally treated as a hoax by modern scholars. The book nonetheless remains a vivid artefact of nineteenth-century Orientalist spiritual speculation.
