Description

Nancy the shopgirl and Lou the factory hand share a New York room and different bets on luck, opening a volume of Manhattan stories that end on a twist. Rent, a hat, elevated trains, and clerks and girls caught in the week’s wage become ironies with a last-line punch. Urban comedy of work and wanting: everyday people heard as cases the city springs on them.

Author

O. Henry (William Sydney Porter, 1862–1910) was America's great popular short-story writer of the early twentieth century — a craftsman of coincidence, slang, and sudden revelation. After years in Texas and a prison sentence that shaped his later career, he settled in New York and turned the city's anonymous millions into characters worth knowing.
