Description

Mr Gammon is a London commercial traveller who keeps dogs at Dulwich and breakfasts in bed at Mrs Bubb’s. Gissing’s lighter novel runs on Polly Sparkes in a rage, a missing uncle, Greenacre the shady hunter, Lord Polperro’s double life, a New Year’s Eve chase — Cockney farce from the author of New Grub Street. Lodging-house weather, a title that will not stay respectable, streets instead of any rural pilgrimage.

Author

George Gissing (1857–1903) was the most unflinching realist of late Victorian England — a novelist who wrote what others preferred not to see. In New Grub Street he exposed the bitter economics of literary life: talent ground down by poverty, compromise, and the market. The Nether World, Born in Exile, and The Odd Women extended that clear-eyed vision to slum existence, intellectual exile, and the precarious lives of unmarried women.
