Description

The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is one of the best known examples of Persian poetry. Although commercially unsuccessful at first, FitzGerald's work was popularised from 1861 onward by Whitley Stokes, and the work came to be greatly admired by the Pre-Raphaelites in England.

Author

Omar Khayyam (1048–1131) was a Persian polymath — mathematician, astronomer, and poet — whose Rubaiyat became one of the most beloved books of world literature through Edward FitzGerald's English versions. The quatrains speak of wine, time, doubt, and fleeting joy with a clarity that still feels modern. Khayyam's voice is sceptical, sensuous, and unforgettable.
