The Ramayana tells the story of a prince, Rama of the city of Ayodhya in the Kingdom of Kosala, whose wife Sita is abducted by Ravana, the demon-king (Asura) of Lanka. Valmiki's Ramayana is dated variously from 500 BCE to 100 BCE or about co-eval with early versions of the Mahabharata.

Valmiki is the legendary sage remembered as the first poet of Sanskrit verse and the traditional author of the Ramayana. The epic follows Rama's exile, Sita's abduction, and the long road home — duty, forest, and devotion in a single current. Later tradition places Valmiki himself in the story, taking in the abandoned queen. One title here. The poem is older than any life we can date; the voice is still the forest clearing where the tale begins.
