Pedro Calderon de la Barca (1600-1681) was a Spanish dramatist, poet, and writer of the Golden Age. He is regarded as one of Spain's foremost playwrights, best known for his philosophical drama Life Is a Dream and his many autos sacramentales. Appointed court dramatist to Philip IV, he later became a priest, yet continued to write plays that blended theology, allegory, and spectacle with lasting theatrical power.
