Description

Paris, the cathedral, Quasimodo in the bells, Esmeralda in the square, Frollo in the dark of his own wanting. Hugo’s Notre-Dame is stone, festival, and a city that loves and breaks its outcasts. Beauty, cruelty, and a church that hears everything. The Feast of Fools, the Court of Miracles, a trial in the shadow of the towers. Hugo built a city that can love a dancer and hunt her in the same week. Gringoire survives by accident; the cathedral does not forgive. Stone, festival, and a city that hunts what it loves.

Author

Victor Hugo (1802–1885) was the towering figure of French Romanticism — poet, playwright, novelist, and public conscience of nineteenth-century France. Notre-Dame de Paris made the cathedral and Quasimodo immortal; Les Misérables turned Jean Valjean's long flight into a national epic of justice, love, and redemption. Hugo wrote at full volume: crowded streets, grand passions, and a politics of pity that refused to look away from the poor.
