Description

Women take the vote in costume and found a commune of goods and husbands. Aristophanes’ Ecclesiazusae is utopian farce: equality tried on like a beard, and the city as a punchline. Athens, sex, and the joke of a perfect law. Praxagora’s laws, a young man hunted by old women, property as a punchline. The same city as the Assemblywomen, another angle on a joke that still lands: be careful what you equalise. Praxagora’s commune trips on desire standing in a queue. Read in English, unabridged.

Author

Aristophanes was a comic playwright of ancient Athens. Eleven of his forty plays survive virtually complete. These, together with fragments of some of his other plays, provide the only real examples of a genre of comic drama known as Old Comedy, and are used to define it. Also known as the Father of Comedy and the Prince of Ancient Comedy, Aristophanes has been said to recreate the life of ancient Athens more convincingly than any other author.
