Description

Gissing’s Crown of Life is love as a test of nerve: Peak between two women, principle against heat, Victorian duty with a pulse. Not a simple triangle — a study of what a man calls honour when he wants two lives. Romance with a moral hangover. Mary or Beatrice, the schoolroom or the pulse. Gissing lets honour talk until it trips. A late-Victorian love story that knows the heart is not a scholarship. Piers Otway between two women and a principle that sweats. Read in English, unabridged.

Author

George Gissing (1857–1903) was the most unflinching realist of late Victorian England — a novelist who wrote what others preferred not to see. In New Grub Street he exposed the bitter economics of literary life: talent ground down by poverty, compromise, and the market. The Nether World, Born in Exile, and The Odd Women extended that clear-eyed vision to slum existence, intellectual exile, and the precarious lives of unmarried women.
