Description

Tara of Helium, John Carter's daughter, is blown by storm to the Kaldanes of Bantoom, heads that ride headless rykors, before Manator's arena forces captives into jetan: living chess fought to the death. Gahan of Gathol follows to free her. Burroughs's fifth Barsoom novel turns Martian chess into blood, with a princess and a jed as the stakes.

Author

Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875–1950) invented Tarzan and John Carter and then refused to stop inventing. Jungle, Mars, Pellucidar, lost cities: he built a pulp engine that made adventure unapologetic and wildly popular. Tarzan leapt from novels into comics, film, and merchandising until the ape-man became a global icon; Barsoom gave science fantasy a desert romance and a swordsman's swagger.
