Description

Ballantyne puts a midshipman beside Cook in the Pacific: uncharted coasts, disease in the berth, boats over the reef toward islands the crew called cannibal. Contact as the 1860s told it — nerve, curiosity, a Christian gloss on the same deck as fear. Mapping and landing as the twin trades; Cook’s last-voyage shadow still over the horizon. Boys’ South Sea adventure spoken as weather, order, and the cost of going ashore.
