Description

Respected Highmarket treasurer Milford Cotherstone faces ruin when an elderly tenant recognises him from a criminal conviction decades earlier. After that man is found dead, blackmail, buried crime, and a murder investigation close in on a town that trusted its ledger. Suspense rich with moral tension and a past that will not stay paid. Spoken as when the borough treasurer still asks what respectability costs when the truth returns.

Author

J. S. Fletcher (1863–1935) treated the detective story as a trade, and honoured it. He produced at a Victorian-Edwardian pace that later Golden Age writers would recognise: wills, country houses, city chambers, and the long English suspicion that respectability is a costume. Fletcher is not flashy. He is reliable — which, in crime fiction, is a kind of style.
